About Moontide Guest Lodge

Touw River and the Garden Route National Park are both within a few miles of Moontide’s doorstep, making it an ideal location to explore the area.

Wilderness’ first home, Moontide, was constructed in the 1920s. As a private residence, Maureen Mansfield lovingly restored it in 1984 after it had fallen into disrepair in the 1980s. She opened the guest house in 1994, with just four rooms, and it was a huge success. Since it was built, it has grown, but there is still a homey feel to it… We hope you’ll get the chance to try it out for yourself soon!

Private garden entrances and outdoor seating areas are provided in each of the hotel’s nine individually decorated guest rooms. The Garden Route Nature Reserve is a kaleidoscope of habitats, including rivers, forests,  lakes, fynbos, estuaries, and beaches. We’re here to help you get the most out of your time in Wilderness.

Many private sundecks overlook the river, which is a part of the national park and protected by a 400-year-old milkwood tree. The beach is only a four-minute walk away, and the local forests are only a ten-minute drive away. With much to do outside, it can be hard to know where to begin.

With our riverside retreat, we also manage a cottage on Wilderness beach for self-catering vacations. There is a fully stocked kitchen with a dining area, four bedrooms, two bathrooms with showers, and a private beach access. There are seasonal variations in prices, but the location alone makes this a great deal.

Our breakfast is served on a terrace with views of the shimmering lagoon, where you can watch kingfishers, cormorants, and dabchicks dart in and out of the reeds. This is the time to discuss the day’s activities and dinner plans. As requested, we provide recommendations and book reservations. There are picnic tables available for guests who want to take advantage of the tranquil surroundings of Moontide, or we can set up a table and suggest the best local takeaways.

About Wilderness

Wilderness is a renowned getaway village along the N2 national highway on the Garden Route in the Western Cape, South Africa, about 15 km east of George and 450 km east of Cape Town. Its white sand beach with a overall length of eight kms along with the warm waters of the Indian Ocean make this fine holiday destination, among other things, a destination for water sports fans.

The N2 national road splits Wilderness in two – while a few homes and lodges have been constructed in a dune area near to the beach, the business district and the remaining town are located over the highway and lagoon. The lagoon’s mountainous land section features a rich vegetation in its forest areas, such as ericas, ferns, milkwood trees, orchids and proteas. The freshwater of mountain rivers and the Indian Ocean’s sea water also produce a appropriate environment for aquatic animals, such as dolphins.

The 2 612 hectare National Wilderness Park is located east of the town and expands 28 kilometers along side sea. Just about all 230 animal species are actually registered here, which include 79 of South Africa’s 95 waterfowl species. Book sea view places to stay in Wilderness with Garden Route Stays!
